I am new to UV path planning field. I have read papers about path planning in 2D and in 3D. But, What is the benefit of 2D planning for UAV since it basically needs altitude i.e. 3D
2D planning is understandable for UGV, but why 2D is acceptable for UAV.

In the large amount of practical cases UAV flight missions require flight over the plain terrain with constant altitude. This is the case of 2D-path planning and path following. However, there are more complicated flight missions including following irregular terrain, obstacles avoiding, manuevers in the ascending mode after take-off and in the descending mode before landing, etc. In these cases 3D-path planning and path following are inevitable.
For Arial vehicles we people usually consider 2D space and assume that the vehicles fly with a fixed attitude or the attitude is not an issue. Remember that in path planning problems the main issues and challenges are often more complex than the altitude control, so to efficiently solve these problems it is reasonable to consider a 2D state space. Besides, there are works that consider 2d movement in a 3D space in a way that at each transition step one of the axis values are fixed. There are many papers in the literature on path planning and I suggest that you go through some to get a better idea of the challenges in the field.
