Dear All,

Can anyone explain how twins and kink bands are different? Based on my  understanding a kink band originates from rotation of crystal planes by shear stress couples, resulting in a kink; something similar to staircase. Does that mean the orientation of the crystal is also changed? If so, how much? Can the kinked region be taken as a different grain with totally different orientation? But twinning is also a result of shearing on a twinning plane changing the orientation of a crystal. So what is the main difference between the two deformation mechanisms?

In addition, when we look at the surface of a sample using OM,  SEM, and TEM we can get 2D images, so how can we tell twins and kind bands apart? Electron diffraction patterns would give a clue about twinning systems. Is there any particular SAED pattern for kink bands too?

I would be grateful if anyone can clarify this. Detailed explanation is appreciated.

Thanks in advance for helping.
