Satellite viruses and polioviruses are very different. The poliovirus (family Picornaviridae, genus Enterovirus) is among one of the most studied viruses. The poliovirus infects humans and is the cause for poliomyelitis. Satellite RNA viruses are subviral agents that encode their own coat protein but not a replicase gene. Many plant viruses have satellite viruses associated with them. The satellite virus will utilize the replicase from the associated virus to complete it's life cycle.
