Process is a part or component of operations. In manufacturing, operations are all the processes required to provide the product from sourcing the materials and equipment required to manufacture the product through the materials management and inventory control process and out through the packaging and deliver processes. In service sector, operations is the management of all the HR elements and KPI elements required to manage the processes used to deliver the service. - Bottom line: A process is a component of actions for a defined activity whilst operations is a multitude of processes and controls to ensure the delivery of something.
Operation is a balanced and an optimal output from different inputs. Operations management is a multidisciplinary area because there are various resources or inputs in an operation. For example, raw materials, production systems, quality control and analysis, finance, marketing, company policies and so on.
A process is a series of steps and decisions; you do in order to achieve a particular result. A process consists of three elements: An input (materials or information), a process with its sub-processes and an output.
At a glance, the two terms seem similar. They both refer to the same activities. The key difference between an operation and a process is “how” versus “what”.
