Overall survival refers to the fact that the patient has not died from any cause. Thus, in a clinical trial the measure of overall survival would compare the number of patients who had died and the number who had not died. Progression free survival refers to survival without progression of the disease. In a clinical trial a measure of progression free survival would compare the number of patients whose disease had progressed (got worse) with the number whose disease had had not progressed.

Overall Survival (OS) is the duration of time from the date of diagnosis or commencement of treatment of a particular disease that a patient is still alive. It is usually employed to assess how a novel treatment works. Whereas, Professional-free survival is the duration of time (from treatment to post treatment) of a disease state, in which a patient lives with the disease condition showing no signs of exacerbating or growing worse.
Overall survival is referred to mean duration of survival after diseases is diagnosed or treated. It did not account for disease progression. While progression free survival is referred to duration or number of years after diagnosis in which diseases did not get worsen.
For example for a patient diagnosed with cancer at age of 24, treated and lived without any progression till 34, then suddenly diagnosed with metastasis and died at 36. Overall survival will be 12 years while progression free survival will be 10 years.
Both are calculated for population rather than individuals.
