I understand that originality could be illuminating new research area, novelty could be creating new methodologies. Please share your comprehensive knowledge, study, statistics, or electronic references.
When one claims that his research is novel, this means that it is new, unusual, & has never been done before on the same lines.
When one claims that his research is original, this means that it is his/her effort & the crime of plagiarism has not been committed. The topic might have been investigated before, but the approach ,in an original research, is different from that of the predecessors & not a single sentence or procedure has been "copied" from them.

If you consider everybody to be honest then everything done research can be assumed to be original but only few of them are novel as they very interesting for large number of people.....in overall '' NOVELTY is SUBSET or ORIGINALITY'
All answers provided above really make sense to me. Originality means its your effort but the research line might have been existing, while novel mean your effort plus something totally new
To me originality means an insight that has emerged as a result of data analysis and research while novelty reflects an idea that is different from the norm
To my experience definitions differ across contexts of application - specifically depending if originality and novelty are talked with reference to scientific publications/articles or grant proposals.
Journals would commonly ask you to supply a statement that research reported about is original meaning that you write it and is not copy-pasted (plagiarized). Originality is something authors need to self-declare in a cover letter to the journal Editor. Novelty, on the other hand, is something you need to demonstrate in the paper with your data/ frameworks and eventually reviewers need to agreed on and confirm.
A slightly different practice can be found across main EU based funding agencies (I have experience with Swedish, Slovene and Dutch RA). They always ask you to demonstrate originality and novelty of your research proposal, but very often are taken two two as synonyms. What they want you to write down is if and how your proposal is innovative and pushing your field in ways nobody as done before. So far I have not encountered a call where originality was meant as a statement of that writings/ ideas being my own as I see being done by journals. Here for such and example: https://www.vr.se/inenglish/researchfunding/applyforgrants/opencalls/evaluationdevelopmentresearch.4.4b1cd22413cb479b8055bb7.html
Hope this helps to add a puzzle to this discussion.
Novelty is associated with newness. Originality is associated with the problem that originated in you. The idea is yours means original. That might have originated by reading some others work. However if few new things are discussed away from the seed work it will augment the understanding and would provide more insights.
hello everyone. I found the information here useful but i have a question. Some say novelty is related to the subject of the research while others say it is the new method one develops.
I am working on trying to deduce how safe the electric car as some people suffer hypersensitivity from EMF devices. what i am working on has been research on but i am proposing a different way of assessing EMF effects. How do i coin my new method in the introduction of manuscript. Find attached a copy of my work for your perusal.
This statement "i am proposing a different way of assessing EMF effects" is what I thing defines Novelty. If you observe new phenomena or reach a new understanding during the course of your work, it is Originality.
Novelty in the particular research area can be identified by a thorough literature search. It will tell us what is known and what are not known means the research gaps. Research topics that are studied but reports are still contradictory may have novelty. Many times, a novel research might just mean disproving what is already known. The novelty will largely depend on scientist in-depth knowledge of the field. With the increasing amount of research output, many high impact journals are now seeking highly novel information to publish. Originality may refer the new research ideas.
novelty is bringing a new perspective about something by doing it in your own way while originality is doing something that came out of you regardless of whether researched or not.
