The difference between IoT and Industry 4.0 should be noted. Industry 4.0 actually means the use of IoT in a specific area - namely in Industry (especially in Production).
Roughly speaking, Industry 4.0 can be considered a synonym of Industrial IoT (IIoT).
IIoT belongs to a big IoT Family: see my figure at:
- Industry 4.0 is referring to the automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies, basically to produce things based on the customers' demand.
- IoT - refers to the myriad sensors that now can feed data into the Internet. Industry 4.0 may use IoT for data collection/distribution but still these are two distinct concepts.
Industry 4.0 includes not just things it also includes cloud computing and cyber physical systems.
Industry 4.0 is the same that the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), a branch of the Internet of Things, which is dedicated to improve the industry using sensors, actuators, and Smart Objects.
The difference between IoT and IIoT. The Industrial Internet of Things deals with the first two areas, increasing efficiency and improving health/safety. IIoT refers to a subcategory of the broader Internet of Things. IoT includes IIoT plus things like wearables, smart ovens, or smart consumer products.
