Social Marketing is the application of marketing techniques to achieve social and environmental goals. Social Marketing can be applied by public bodies, governments and any non corporate stakeholder as well as firms.
Corporate Social Responsibility is a corporate practice requiring the voluntary investment of corporate resources to minimize the negative impacts of their operations and generally contribute to social welfare with an strategic intent (e.g social legitimacy)
CSR is creating value for stakeholders. Social marketing is a very small part of it : it doesn't include any issues concerning governance, human rights, worplace, corruption & bribery, community development...
Hi Ives.... I would respectfully disagree with you. Social Marketing is simply the application of marketing techinques (i.e segmentation, profiling) to better "sell " a complex social issue and elicit behaviour change to solve it. The issues you mention are all included/can be addressed with social marketing. See just as an example the World Bank Report ( 1998!) on social marketing strategies to fight corruption.

The key difference is that Social Marketing can be applied ( and it is applied) by governments and other non-corporate stakeholders ( PETA being a case in point).....Indeed, interestingly...very few companies use social marketing in their CSR programmes...so in that I agree that social marketing is in practice a very small part of CSR strategies.
In terms of CSR being about creating value to stakeholders.... that is part of it, but there is quite a lot of controversy on what type of value CSR should deliver, so don't going there !
To follow up on Diego's fair remarks, sometimes social marketing and CSR are treated the same within companies...Just consider how often the CSR department refers to the marketing-VP...
