What is the difference between a carbon source and an energy source?

Microbes utilize aromatic hydrocarbons (Benzene for example) as the source of carbon and energy. The compounds are biotransformed (beta-ketoadipate) into the intermediates of TCA cycle and then utilized for microbial growth. So, does the compound acts as a source of carbon or energy or both? What is the difference between these two terms in the context of above-mentioned example?
