Ben-Ari manuscript,  (Limbic seizure and brain damage produced by kainic acid: mechanisms and relevance to human temporal lobe epilepsy- Neuroscience. 1985 Feb;14(2):375-403.)  contain the follow information: page 385 "The next phase which starts 1 h after KA is characterized by the occurrence of individual recurrent limbic motor seizures. These are identical to the seizures produced by repeated daily electrical stimulation of the amygdala or other limbic structures 69". Therefore, these two scales seem to be the same. Another scale used was described by Pinel and Rovner, Exp Neurol. 58, 335-346 (1978). That scale is an extension of Racine's scale, with 8 points:(i) facial movements only, (ii) facial movements and head nodding, (iii) facial movements, head nodding, and forelimb clonus, (iv) facial movements, head nodding, forelimb clonus, and rearing, (v) facial movements, head nodding, forelimb clonus, rearing, and falling, (vi) a class 5 pattern terminating with multiple rearing and falling episodes, (vii) a running fit, (viii) a running fit with periods of tonus.

This question is quite important for understanding the seizure stages or scales used in different kindling models of epilepsy. 

Dr. Aline explained nicely about the seizure stages or scales introduced/ used by Prof. Ron Racine, Prof. Yehezkel Ben-Ari, Professors Pinel and Rovner and others in the kindling model of epilepsy, and extension of Racine’s stages (e.g. five additional stages for: Multiple stage five seizures, jumping, running, jumping & running, and two different seizures with a partial seizure in-between). 

Inspite of minor additions, the major stages or manifestations you mentioned are almost similar as explained by Racine. Hence, most of the researchers working in the area of kindling model of epilepsy follow Racine’s stages with alterations/ additions according to their own model and requirements. In fact, it is also important that which type of seizure one is studying in the kindling model, since the kindled convulsions can be produced electro-physiologically and chemically/ pharmacologically by a variety of chemicals. 

Several researchers followed the seizure scales introduced by Ron in rat studies.  However, they documented according to their observations for their models. e.g. the following article helps understanding the PTZ-induced seizures in rats, where it was found that Racine’s scale was not appropriate for determining the seizure intensity of PTZ induced convulsions, and hence, an alternate scale comprising six categories explained the PTZ induced seizures adequately:

Conclusively, the model of features/ stages investigated by Racine still serves as the standard for explaining the severity of convulsions, with the addition of further stages for the more severe cases.
