The commitee of Taxonomy of the Society of marine Mammalogy has recognized as Arctocephalus australis un-named subspecies to the "Peruvian fur seal" for differentiate it from the specimens of the eastern coast of Southamerica. I need know if this subspecies is studied by some researcher for a definitive classification.

South American fur seals are sexually dimorphic. Adult males are approximately 1.3 times longer and 3.3 times heavier than adult females. Both adult males and females have a stocky robust build, large prominent eyes, long conspicuous ear pinnae, and moderate length yellowish white vibrissae. The muzzle is moderately long, straight, and tapers in width and thickness to the nose. The rhinarium is slightly enlarged on the top, contributing to the somewhat upturned look to the end of the muzzle in profile. The crown is rounded and there is a conspicuous forehead that is steeper in adult males.
Some investigators recognize two subspecies, although there is controversy that awaits genetic and additional morphological studies for resolution. Recognized subspecies include A. a. gracilis from both coasts and coastal waters of South America from Peru to Brazil, and A. a. australis from the Falkland Islands.

Two subspecies have been described: Arctocephalus australis australis (Zimmerman, 1783) for the Falkland subpopulation and Arctocephalus australis gracilis (Nehring, 1887) for the mainland subpopulation. Animals from the Falkland subpopulation have been reported to be larger than animals from the South American coastal subpopulation (Rice 1998). However, the validity of these subspecies is disputed (Reijnders et al 1993).

Dear Jose, should use Arctocephalus australis because Arctophoca or Arctocephalus australis gracilis was recently synonymized as Arctocephalus australis. See Oliveira & Brownell (2014) (see more in: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/mms.12098/abstract)

1.- A. a. australis (Zimmermann, 1783). South American fur seal. Atlantic and South chilean populations.
