Hello I am currently studying toward my doctorate in Computer Science and my research borders on Security, privacy and trust in IoT using Blockchain technology.
I am leaning towards the use of a decentralized model (Blockchain) as a solution to IoT, and aim to focus on Security and privacy.
At this moment, I cant seem to find a unique problem to address in this area that can lead to the award of a PhD.
Please I will really like someone to point me in the right direction regarding current identified problems, research gaps, and the landscape.
I am open to ideas, and I am willing to collaborate with other researchers in this
your ideas and cooperation in this regard will be highly appreciated.

There are 2 IoT fields where blockchain is used most:
Vehicular technology (securing the communication using BC) and Supply chain (SC product security using BC).
Please see which field you find more comfortable.

I would suggest taking a closer look at the IOTA idea. Similar goals are pursued with IOTA and Blockchain. I would now like to briefly address the goals of IOTA.
In the future, "Virtual Marketplaces (VMs)" and "Virtual Industry Marketplaces (VIMs)" will be set up. A kind of Virtual Banking is being implemented there.
These VMs and VIMs are set up on the basis of manufacturer-neutral, Internet-based platforms in order to be able to automate the trade in physical and digital goods and services. Various IoT-specific system components are used in VIMs. Fog Computing and Cloud Computing will be of great importance in the IoT.
To implement such VIMs, we need new, internet-based, secure payment systems for machines. Traditional payment systems were designed for people, not machines. The traditional money for M2M payments on the VIMs is no longer suitable. The M2M payments are actually realized between end objects in the IoT. This idea should be realized with the help of IOTA.

Dear Fasih,
I will recommend you explore the application of blockchain in privacy-enabled smart marketplaces or go for mitigations of security and identity-related attacks such as blockchain analysis attacks, DDoS attacks, etc. Scientists are exploring these areas currently.

Blockchain generates a Distributed Ledger System where all the transactions are stored in all the nodes. This uses a lot of energy from the IoT nodes which are already deprived of energy. I am sorry if my answer sounds a bit negative, but if you have a solution without a problem, maybe you are going the wrong direction in the first place?
Blockchain is definitely quite a fascinating technology and also quite a hype, but looking at it honestly, there are not that many problems where blockchain provides a better solution than more conventional technologies. The main advantage of blockchain is the possibility to document transactions reliably within a large group of people that do not trust each other, and that do not have any central entity they all trust. However, this type of situation does not occur that often. There are many other situations where one might use blockchain technology, but where its benefit is rather doubtful.
