According to broad classification alkali soil (USDA) . A soil may be classified as alkali soil generally pH above 8.5, exchangeable sodium percentage in the bi-carbonate and carbonate form above 15% and soluble salt content is below 4 dsm-1.

Alkali soil may be reclaimed by application of gypsum ( calcium  sulfate) @ 2.5 to 5 tons ha-1 on the basis of gypsum requirement of alkali  soil. Apart from gypsum application green manuring by legume crop Sebenia aculeta,use of organic matter @ 10 tons ha-1 or enriched organic matte like vermi-comost @ 5 tons ha-1 preferable on set of the monsoon season.
