Has anyone checked the degradability of carbamazepine using pure isolated cultures? I have done flask experiments to degrade CBZ using few microbes isolated from soil acclimatized for carbamazepine, but unfortunately did not find any growth.
Check e.g. Science of the Total Environment 408:1701 (2010): Carbamazepine was co-metabolized in the presence of an easily degradable carbon source by Rhodococcus and Aspergillus. Obviously also Pleurotus ostreatus is able to degrade carbamazepine (Environmental Science and Technology 45:6800 (2011). In addition, you might evaluate ligninolytic fungi for their degradation ability, since they are known to attack recalcitrant (aromatic) compounds.
