Choosing the most sensitive model organism increases chances of discovery – the example of the giant squid
There was a reason why studies on the giant squid allowed us to understand the mechanisms behind the functions of neurons relatively early. This is because the giant squid has the largest neurons where one could expect that the measurable perturbations caused by the factors affecting neuronal functions would be most pronounced and that could therefore be most easily be distinguished from the noises in those measurements that are caused by other confounding factors, such as variations of temperature or other stressors, which are not essential for neuronal functions.
