I realize this is more of a subjective question, but I was wondering if anyone had any experience with what is the best way to present a phylogeny in a visual aid?

I am making several signs for public display, and I know from personal experience that the way phylogenies are drawn can have big impacts on the layperson's ability to understand the information being presented in it, so I am trying to find the best way to get information across. Should the tree be oriented vertically or horizontally? Should the names of the terminal taxa be angled? Should divergences be represented smoothly or with right angles?
