the IoT is an extension of the Internet. Like the Internet, the IoT is therefore also an IP network. This means that the IP packets must be sent to the end objects in the IoT in corresponding MAC frames.
In order to be able to use objects of different types on the IoT and to be able to address them, IPv6 addresses were provided. In addition, the IoT end objects can have special identifiers - and these are: EPC (Electronic Product Code), RFID (Radio Frequency Identification).
The use on the IoT of end objects with identifiers EPC and RFID would largely correspond to the use on the Internet (IP network !!!) of telephones or of cell phones with telephone numbers. These are used as identifiers on the Internet. The telephone numbers are mapped to the IP addresses using a resolving system (so-called ENUM: Telephone Number Mapping). Thanks to ENUM, we can make calls over the Internet without having to enter IP addresses directly.
Resolution systems similar to ENUM can be set up for the IoT to enable the use of EPC and RFID identifiers to address the end objects in the IoT. These resolution systems can assign EPC and RFID to the IPv6 addresses.
Note: An IPv6 address is 128 bits long. This address length enables an unimaginable number of IPv6 addresses. This is 340,282,366,900,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 IPv6 addresses, which is roughly 340 sextillion addresses. Estimated up to 4x1018 IPv6 addresses per square meter on earth.
Conclusion: The IPv6 addresses are available in very large quantities for the IoT.
The IETF standard 6LoWPAN defines how IoT objects can be addressed.
