There are many ways that saves energy consumption in WSN, you must choose the mechanism that suits your application.
There are some main categories for energy efficiency over WSN:
-Sleep/Awake mechanism
-Data reduction
-energy efficient routing
-radio optimization
-battery recharging
each way has its pros and cons, the decision of using one of them decided by the application used in WSN, for example about data reduction:
Data aggregation Vs. Data compression
Data compression: compress the data to reduce its size, this is a way that can be reduce the amount of energy consumed. But this way are hard to perform practically due to the limitation of sensor nodes resources that gets in the way of compression algorithms.
Data Aggregation: aggregate the data received using a function to reduce the traffic, this way may decrease the delay which is a good thing, but it will increase the error rate (depends on the function used to aggregate the data), making it hard on the base station to recover the data successfully .
My choice is to use network coding techniques:
Network Coding: Network coding mechanism tries to make each sensor node doing operations more than data communication, this mechanism can reduce the energy consumed by data communication be reducing traffic. Network coding is produced by having each sensor node wants to transmit some data packets to combine these packets into a linear combination and send one combination rather than several packets, relay nodes then can decode this combination using a linear equation
after you choose your energy efficiency category from above, you should then look for the best routing mechanism that suits yours:
-Location-based routing protocols
-multi-hop routing protocols (Failed)
-Hierarchical routing protocols
after all of that you can implement an energy efficient routing protocol for saving energy, For example:
