In most cases onion continuously decayed during storage in the ambient condition of Bangladesh. To reduce post harvest loss it need to identify the optimum temperature and humidity to reduce post harvest loss of Onion. We would like to know the research based result at humid tropics for safe storage of onion.
Hm, cannot help you regarding the temperature question, but you might also want to figure out whether lowering the oxygen concentration also might help. If it works that would be more energy efficient than a cooling installation.
In Bangladesh, we have two types of onion - winter onion having better shalf l;ive with higher TSS (15-20%) and summer onion having higher water (%) . low shelf life and TSS ((8-13%). Smallar size onion are more stable in storage compared to large one. Winter onion can store more than 6 months in ambient condition (28-35 degree C) with proper aeration. It is found that summer onion can store in lower temperature but the temperature and humidity is not yet standardized here. thus need research for a concrete findings.
