I was wondering whether there has been a paradigm shift in the last years in how we model realistic neuronal networks? I have been trying to get a foot in the topic, as I intend to model and simulate hippocampal CA3. Obviously, NEURON was my first place to go, but I feel that MATLAB toolboxes like DynaSim should be competetive enough by now to make classic simulators redundant. I am asking because I was wondering whether it is feasible for young researchers to learn multiple simulation environments rather than perfecting one.

NEST mostly favors large network models, while NEURON is better suited for detailed models. However, there are many other popular packages (GENESIS and BRIAN) , which target the same or similar fields. All simulators tend to support a large range of models of neurons and synapses. However, the performance of these simulators is different, and the complexity of codes required for model description is diverse. Not all simulators can be used on computational clusters, but all of them may be used on multicore computers with some limitations.
