In terms of efficiency there is no problem in encrypting your data before embedding it in the LSB. In fact, AES has very efficient implementations in most programming languages and depending on your hardware it may even be implemented in the CPU.
However, you should take into account that AES produces high entropy streams and will probably be very easy to detect. This is, in terms of security (detectability), it is not the best scheme. Least significant bits are usually not very random, and replacing them with a "random" stream will generate statistical differences that could be used to detect the existence of hidden information.
I wouldn't drop the idea of using AES encryption, but would look for a better place to embed those random bits. Look for a part of the cover that can be modified, but at the same time is random enough so your changes do not change the statistical properties of the cover (An example could be random identifiers that are used in some communication protocols). Another option could be to use a minimum portion of the cover (LSB) capacity, so the statistical changes introduced are not very significant.
My first impression is that you are more looking towards the engineering point of view rather than research. Encryption and steganography are indeed two different research topics used for different purposes. I highly recommend you to do a thorough literature review and identify the research gaps. Based on the identified gaps, you can figure out a suitable solution.
