I am in the middle of my assignment which is a small research project and I need to edit the methodology. My tutor has recommended me to find an hour long documentary online to analyse to do with what I am finding out. I have found one and I have began analysing, but I need to add the appropriate research method in the methodology.
Louise - You can use documentary research method. Document analysis is a method to analyze several types of documents, or evaluates the meaning of, documents collected as data throughout the research process. It is the used as outside sources, documents, to support the viewpoint or argument of an academic work. The process of documentary research involves some or all of conceptualizing, using and assessing documents. You can interpret the documents to give voice and meaning to the data in the research project.
A good response from Manzoor and, most likely, the most appropriate design. Other 'potential' designs could include, narrative analysis if it is heavily narrated and spoken, content analysis and/or discourse analysis (although DA is normally reserved for texts).
Try using "content analysis". There is a book called "the content analysis guide book" that could help.

Does document analysis still apply to film documents? As I looked at this in my Social Research Studies book by Alan Bryman and it was just talking about text and documents.
Does content analysis and document analysis fall under qualitative research?
You could do a content analysis of the same if in text on NVIVO.It will help you make the word count,sentiment analysis and word cloud.
Hi, sorry to spark this again but I am now working on my methodology as I have conducted my data analysis. I am thinking of using either: document analysis, narrative analysis or content analysis. I am unsure of the most appropriate method.
It is a video found on YouTube in relation to parenting strategies which I will be analysing. This was a documentary shown on ITV1 but has since been archived. Also, as I am analysing a video what ethics will I need to consider? I was originally going to do focus groups but due to time-frame I have been advised not to. Discussing the ethics on this was very straightforward. I am finding it difficult expressing the ethics as I am analysing a video and not interviewing or speaking to people face to face.
Frankly, I would suggest you compare and contrast these three methods for their differences. and use all three methods to assess the facts, the narrative, story line and reasoning and to distinguish facts from opinions. You may well find out more than what you bargained.
