The drivers for the MOST and the IGBT need to deliver the required drive current and have the required driving voltage. The current in case of such devices is a cpacitive current to charge or discharge the gate of the transistor. So you have only to define the specifications of your driver according to the the power device which you intended to use.

I would advice you to refer to the application note of the Texas instrument on the MOSFET and IGBT drivers. You will be able to choose the proper driver for your application.http://www.ti.com/lit/ml/slua618/slua618.pdf

These have galvanic isolation and an internal isolated DC/DC converter, thus you do not have to worry about any external isolated power supply. They also offer the desaturation protection for the short circuit protection of the IGBTs.

Bear in mind that their PWM signal inputs are 5V or 15V compatible so you will need to level shift the 3.3V PWM signal. You can level shift it easily by using a transistor-resistor combination or by using a MOSFET gate driver.

Anyway, you can try use the combination of isolated dc-dc converter with optocoupler

You may use skyper driver circuit for your IGBT which gives reliable operation and there is inbuilt level shifter.

I've used Mitsubishi M57958L drivers, these can be driven direct from a 5V pulse generator on pins 1 and 2. They require a +15V and a -10 power supply to operate. So a logic high input to the driver provides a +15V output to the gate of the IGBT and a logic 0 input to the driver provides a -10V output to switch off the IGBT. A pair of 18V zener diodes is required on the output as overvoltage protection to the IGBT gate. You can drive these up to 25kHz. Optical isolation is built into the driver chip to prevent back EMF from switching heavy loads propagating back and upsetting your DSP. You would have to adapt the complementary PWM signals from your DSP to TTL to drive the IGBT driver chip. These have been around for some time. If you cant locate the M57958L chip try using a M57962L, this is a newer version you can get these from Farnell and are suited for driving N channel IGBT modules and provide high levels of isolation from transients and switching loads.

It depends very much on your product volume needs. The engineering effort and expense to ensure proper operation and fault response is much higher for designs at the IC level than at the module level. The fact that you are asking this question makes me think you should be utilizing a complete module. Semikron's Skyper series, as others have mentioned, offer good drive and protection features, and include the isolated bias supplies (full disclosure - my company is a Semikron affiliate). I also like the drivers designed by CT Concept, which has been owned by Power Integrations for the last few years. Both have been successfully applied at my company.

The Powerex M57962L is an encapsulated chip module designed specifically for driving IGBTs, with appropriate built in fault protection, using something like this would minimise your design effort, there are other IGBT driver chips from other leading suppliers. Its difficult to say which is best, that depends on your design criteria and what level of inherent fault protection you require. Don't forget to use a gate bleed resistor on the IGBT gate to remove accumulated charge, the gate is essentially a capacitor so one needs to use a high value resistor across the gate. Some IGBT designs suffer with random switching due to accumulated charge on its gate.

Is that drive circuit working for multi-levels? i.e. for a three-level NPC i will have 4 switches per leg. Two high and others low.

How many isolated DC supply will be needed?

Both drivers I tested are simple and can work easily for low and high side. I hope you find them or equivalent to them in Egypt. There is another simpler driver here using just opto-coupler

You must use for each driver an isolated power supply and the easiest way it to use a small transformer for each with rectifier and regulator,,, each GND should be isolated and connected to the source of the Mosfet/IGBT. if you can get b0505s, this might make it easier

is not a gate driver but a half bridge pole (i.e. you can drive a load directly).

You could use two of those to drive IGBTs in half-bridge but you need an isolated (floating) power supply for the high-side IGBT. In addition, it does not offer galvanic isolation as you asked in the initial question.

What is more, using two of those devices to drive a half-bridge is not recommended since they are not matched and you might have problems with the dead time and hence shoot through.

Initially designer has to determine the required gate current (maximum peak gate current should also take into account) and the driver output power. Following document may be helpful if you are designing a gate driver for the first time.
