I am re-analysing an old radio-tracking dataset and am wondering what is the best habitat use software that is currently available as freeware. Although I am willing to work on MCPs, I would prefer to use kernel analyses as these would seem to be more appropriate for my dataset. Am I obliged to use ArcView to generate the resulting maps for publication or are there other options? Thanks.
I'd recommend the software R using the package 'adehabitat' (http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/adehabitat/). It'll allow for the calculation of KUDs and the instructions given in the package description make it easy for anybody, even if you have limited experience with R. Happy to try and help you out if you get stuck somewhere.

Just a remark regarding the recommended R package "adehabitat". This package is no longer updated and has been replaced since quite a while by 4 different packages (see https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-sig-ecology/2010-September/001499.html).
The four new packages are:
* adehabitatMA: functions to perform spatial operations (morphology, buffer, etc.)
* adehabitatHS: functions for the analysis of habitat selection
* adehabitatHR: functions for home range estimation
* adehabitatLT: functions for movement analysis

I would also recommend using the R software. Not sure if your data will fit the requirements but check out the page http://tlocoh.r-forge.r-project.org/. Being able to attach a time value with T-LoCoH makes the analysis so much more powerful. Otherwise, the kernel utilisation distribution should meet your requirements.
