We evaluated 10 commercial anatomy software programs for an undergraduate systems-based course and chose Netter's 3D Interactive Anatomy.  There are more details about Netter's and the other programs in the paper I've linked.  We included our suggestions on which programs might work best for different types of courses.

There are many 3d Anatomy DVDs. To chose one is just a problem of budget, of your level, of the curriculum level, technical devices to use it, the school you teach (medical students, dental, other)  and of expectancies of the students who benefit, who can enjoy one or reject another.

Here at the Physician Assistant program in Jacksonville we use Anatomy.TV through our Health Professions library.  We find it features an interactive 3D human anatomy models, MRI scans, clinical images, movies, interactive animations, quizzes and more.

Includes single modules targeting a specific body region, professional function, or medical specialty as well as modules covering the entire human body.

The content including text, images, and animations may be exported for use in lectures, student presentations or patient handouts.

In the Nova Lisbon Medical School, in Portugal, we still struggle to include Human Dissection as an important issue of the Anatomical curricula of our Medical Students, both in undergraduate studies, as for the technical and surgical training in postgraduate studies. It is expensive and implies hard work for the staff, but the outcome results are impressive.

It is our strong belief that 3D assisted computer programs are useful as a complement to dissection, but not as a substitute in Medical curricula.

For a few years, we also had to struggle with scarsness of human cadaveric material, and started a good collection of plastinized models, and developped techniques of preservation of specimens. After 35 years, of constant quest for the donnation of human bodies, mentallities have slowly evolved in our country, and the legal cadaveric donnation list has evolved in an exponential way.

 In reference to the above issue, I should remark and emphasize a few more topics:

The best 3D model  for teaching Gross Anatomy is still in our days the embalmed cadaver.

Due to difficulty in finding legal cadaveric donation in our country, we have developed over 30 years a donation cabinet  to promote ethic  and legal donation list, in full respect for the religious beliefs of our population

Even so, with tend to preserve every cadaveric donation to allow long-term conservation.

Our 15 years experience with these conservation methods are still under improvement.

In our next work, we will present reference to the experimental use of several embalming techniques, with conservation times between one or one and half year, up to five years.

Our best results were obtained during our first years of experimentation, when we developed our perfusion pump in straight collaboration with CEFITEC and the Department of Physics of the Faculty of Technological Sciences of our University.

The development of this perfusion pump allows complete vascular perfusion in closed circuit with perfect control of debits and capillary perfusion, with pulsed impregnation of tissues, simulating the cardiac rhythms.

The specimens we use, both for undergraduate dissections (over a period of six weeks of manipulations), as for post graduation courses and surgical training sessions, bear great quality and endurance, as you can check from this Prezzi presentation in attachment ( http://prezi.com/qk-muuogpev7/?utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=copy&rc=ex0share )

The materials we use for current conservation, consisting of a modified mixture of Theil, are quite inexpensive and easy to purchase, and, most of all, less toxic than Formaldehyde, for the staff. (Should I remind that Formaldehyde is one of the few -9- well-documented cancerigenic materials still in the market)

1. Yes, the recommended softs are ok, you can try any, according to the network you have, some need very powerful hardware to flow.

2. There are also movies on live dissection and/or surgery, which you can use.

3. plastinated specimens are very useful for head and CNS, but for limbs and trunk offer limited information to students

I will be starting to utilize BodyViz for 3-D gross anatomy course content.  This program is nice because you can input your own MRI/CT scans to make your own content.  As well, it is developing capability to use 3-D printing.

Dear Friend: We use ipads with Essential Anatomy (3D4Medicals), with excelent performance in the gross anatomy course content.

You can also use our Checkpoint software to load medical data in DICOM format and have your students interact with scans of real patients similar to how a radiologist does.
