Dear RG users,
You know that field works are essential in geological surveys. I'm wondering if you have any ideas of an app (android) that can cover field investigation from preparation (input of geological map, sketches), visualizing them in the field and then collect data (creation of files).
Here is a list of what I think is essential for the app I'm looking for :
- Input of different maps (geologic, topographic, sketches, satellite images) from a computer after georeferencing (different layers).
- Visualization of the user's location on the maps
- Input of referenced points from a computer.
- creation of georeferenced XY points from the app that includes: (1) short description (field notes, descriptions), (2) dip-direction data (input of structural data), (3) take pictures and annotate them (i.e. to show up some structures), sketches (i.e. to make a quick draw of some observations).
- Recover the data from a computer.

The geological survey needs to be documented in a technical way.
The field data collection could be supported by the GPS and GIS aerial photography tools to map the location and its features.
To identify the resource mapping in the given study area where multiple kinds of resources are dispersed in different locations that have to be documented accurately.
The modern softwares are highly supporting with GPS particularly.
It is very useful to the researchers one who is supposed to collect the field data in the proper sequence.
It could be a experimental reality of recording all the resource issues of the particular geographical locations.
The researcher has experienced in the field of Geoinfrmatics that he could categorise all the essential information in a systematic way.
The data collection in the field of mapping the different resources including natural, physical, environmental and structural things have to be documented with the help of new technologies.

first you use Arcgis for all yours field data
second you have python to resolve and visualize the result
OsmAnd is another powerful Android app which can be used for geographical mapping.
OsmAnd is an offline world map application based on OpenStreetMap (OSM), which allows you to navigate taking into account the preferred roads and vehicle dimensions. Plan routes based on inclines and record GPX tracks without an internet connection.

At a time, I used FieldMove, but I don't now if it's still available and the quality compared to current cocurrent apps. I know that Global Mapper has its own mobile declination, so if you're looking for a cartographic aide, that could do, depending also on the budget, I recon I'm not very aware of free/open sources apps unfortunately.

A set of different maps (incl. geological, topographical, etc), and aerial photos can be used offline. I've checked this software last Summer in the remote areas of Northern Siberia
The Geological Survey of Canada has one publically available that many Provincial Survey's in Canada use - https://github.com/NRCan/GSC-Field-Application. It is currently windows-tablet based and most Canadian governments use ESRI products (general fear in IT that opensource will take down the network :) ), and the data structure is fairly rigid. But I like that it functions for all types of geologists and all types of geology (i.e. some people may find it a bit cumbersome if they are only working in the same area(s) with the same rock types).
For simple location tracking, photo documentation, waypoint collection, and in-the-field orientation with multiple overlays, GaiaGPS has a great free version with a lot of free (and accurate!) content. All with seamless syncing between devices and backed-up to an online server--I use my Android platform field tablet and phone at the same time when working. I'm just now exploring the paid subscription which seems even more powerful.
