There is not an exact recipe about if have to be before or after. If the time you feel on the mood in. I mean you can start with a theoretical manuscript about the experiment you are doing, and then try with the result with a more complex manuscript. Thats my recommendation... Is common that in the first try you do not achieve to publish in a big journal, but you can start publishing in the small ones to learn.. Do not worried about it, every one of us just are passing this process...

You usually have to follow the publishers' guidelines, but designing the manuscript before or after the research doesn't matter, as Wileidys Artigas said. Review papers require that bias in the different methodologies is taken into account, journal articles and conference papers are based on research, and book chapters are different again, being based on summaries and conclusions of existing work.

As others said, it is better to have a plan in your mind how to organize your paper based on the background, research questions, other relevant studies to yours, methods you used to answer your research questions, your observations and results, conclusions based on results and significance of findings, and finally possible future extensions of your current research. In fact, one can prepare a simple, small sketch to include what they need to highlight in the manuscript under each and every topic mentioned above. This can be organized before starting your original manuscript. In addition to use it as an organizer of the manuscript, it will ensure not miss important facts from the manuscript. Perhaps, you can also arrange your manuscript under same sub-headings (or you can make them more descriptive using each heading as a guide).

Some authors target a journal for publication before they starting to write the manuscript, while others prepare the manuscript first, in general and then change according to the selected journal to submit. If you can target a journal before starting to write your manuscript, it will save your time since you could read the guidelines of the journal beforehand.

Indeed, you can start to write your manuscript before completing your research. However, this could apply only for some sections of the manuscript. This is a common scenario in dissertation writing.

Manuscript writing depends on what you are submitting, if it is a book, review article or a short communication you can assimilate all your information, analyse, edit and submit. However if it is as original article or a research study the preparation of the manuscript can only commence after the results are compiled through statistical analysis.

I have read a few points written by Michael Marak about manuscript writing.

I Introduction a). Define the problem b). Provide the goals of the researcher at the beginning of study c). Indicate why the study is significant

II. Literature review – Begin with introductory paragraphs outlining the scope of the literature review and then use sub-headers to divide the individual sections. Identify and discuss each concept or issue relevant to the study, citing other studies consistently. At least half of the references must be within the last five years. Make sure that it is clear why and how the concept or issue is relevant to your study or problem.

III. Methodology a. Describe the instructional design sufficiently that a reader can reproduce it. At this point, describe the participants briefly and in general terms. b. Describe the research design

i.Data collection plan (quantitative and/or qualitative) ii.Data analysis plan (quantitative and/or qualitative) IV. Findings a.introductory paragraph

b.Quantitative findings, including tables as needed to clarify descriptive or inferential statistics. c.Qualitative findings, including quotes to illustrate the theme

V. Discussion a. Address each of the most important findings or results of your study as follows: i. Briefly summarize the finding

ii. Compare and contrast the findings to other studies

iii. Explain the meaning, implications, and value of the finding

b. After discussing each major finding, provide conclusions and/or recommendations based on your findings and discussion. In an Education-related study, this usually means things teachers and curriculum designers should do, based on the outcomes of your study.

Notes: 1) Either in the discussion or in the conclusion, you have the option of listing suggestions for additional research based on your research design and findings. 2) The focus of the discussion is the insights of the researcher. Do not make the mistake of simply repeating facts. Attempt to explain “why.”

VI. Conclusion – Refer back to your original problem and state how your study has addressed this problem. In the process, restate the significance of your study.
