I want to see effects of high fluoride in drinking water on children (age group 9 to 11 years) , for IQ , I plan to take up the Raven's progressive matrices test but for cognitive abilities , what should I do ?
Cognitive ability is the broader term; IQ testing is one way to assess it. You are proposing to use the Raven's, which measures fluid reasoning. What does the literature suggest might be specific effects of high fluoride? This will help you choose another measure or two--working memory? attention and concentration? processing speed?
I don't know what resources you have available. I might use the NEPSY-II Auditory Attention and Response Set, or possibly a computer-based test of attention like the Conners CPT.
If you don't yet know the effects of fluoride on this age group, why would you want to limit yourself to a nonverbal measure of intelligence? I would recommend the WISC-4. There are 10 basic subtests measuring 4 factors of intelligence: verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, freedom from distractibility and processing speed. It is more time-consuming than the Raven, but the Raven gives you one score. Isn't life more complicated than that?
