What about the pathophysiological mechanisms of the frequent association between pneumonectomy and post-operative thrombocitosis, regardless of tumor histology and stage or pre-operative platelets count? thank you.
In the Veterinary Pathology field, I have been observing, in some canine and feline necropsy cases which death was consequence of non-pulmonary pathology, the presence of megakaryocytes in alveolar capillaries. Could lung capillaries, in canine, feline and human species, be a secondary site of thrombocytopoiesis? If so, this could explain the occurrence of post-operative reactive thrombocytosis.
