High voltage with a high frequency is generated by electronic ballasts to create ionization inside fluorescent lamps they are connected to, such that the lamp ignites instantly. This is used in all CFL lamps having integrated electronic ballasts, or in strip type fluorescent lamps with separate electronic ballasts. It is also used to accelerate the electrons in all CRT type display systems like oscilloscopes, monitors, TV's etc.
