I have been wondering about the internal structure of the TREC file format. Is it just an XML file with .trec name extension or there is more to that?
By converting multiple .xml files to a single .trec file, do I need to just bring all the XML files into a single XML file (of course, the contents of each XML file are now in a single XML file:
document number
content
) and rename its extension or something special should be done?
Please help, if somebody knows the technicalities...

Thanks for the valuable answer. I read the sources specified but these still contain very little about the technical details, especially about the .trec extension

Here is what I have discovered so far.
As I am working with Terrier IR platform, where if TREC collection is given, it does indexing and searching very quickly and efficiently instead of giving XML collection.
First, I converted multiple .xml files to a single .xml file by bringing all the XML files into a single XML file with contents look like the following:

book title
...
- Badges
- Science topic
- Similar topics
- Filing
