It is a specific mean - field form of a regularly arranged (idealized) dislocation array of dislos with alternating sign in 2D formulation that serves to explain a simple form of the sqrt rho (G I Taylor) relationship betwen disl density and local flow stress. Quite a resourceful note, Dierk Raabe ! You could have more explicitly show the nature of attraction and repulsion between nearby dislocations to form "lattice" in your notes (I'm quite confident you indeed explain the same to students)

BTW, (and somewhat off-topic) on page 17, how have you found out expression of u_x for edge dislocation? Yes, I was taught stress-field expressions for both edge and screw, but edge formula was nowhere derived.
