My first thought was- the decisions that are made, or taken! (depending on how one sees it) But maybe the 2-words of strategic & management should also include the implementation of ditto. And strategic could clarify/reinforce the major, or the important decisions.
So how about something like strategic management = formulation and implementation of the major goals and initiatives taken by an organization's managers/management?
All of those, of course. Strategic Management means managing your Strategy, and managing includes goals, plans, decisions, and more. Imagine you're riding a bike: where you want to go is your strategic goal, the path to there is your strategic plan, and on that path you have to constantly steer the wheel and course-correct - those are your strategic decisions.
A decision is a choice from a set of alternatives in order to solve a problem or to achieve a goal.
A goal is a desired target to be achieved in the long-term future.
A plan is a set of decisions made to be implemented in the future in respect of the five basic questions (what is to be done? why is it to be done, how is it to be done? where is it to be done, and who should do it?).
The term Strategic refers to something that is done to achieve a particular advantage and something relating to overall or long-term aims and interests.
Strategic Management includes decisions, goals, and plans which are long-term. It consists of formulating, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive plan (conclusions from internal and external environments' analyses; decisions such as the organization's vision, mission and goals; and corporate and competitive business actions) in order to create and sustain a competitive advantage.
Yes Strategic Management is about here (the present) there (the future) and how to get from here to there (implementation).
Apparently the doing of (serious & one meant for tangible results) Strategic Management shouldn't sound so simple.
How you (individual or corporate) define Strategic Management tends to determine the scoping (breath & profundity) with which you treat every accouterment of Strategic Management.
The success of your Strategic Management effort is in the ultimate, a function of this scoping (breath & profundity let me repeat).
If the scoping is stunted, the Strategic Management effort will underachieve.
I would propose the following conceptualisation of Strategic Management.
"...is the pragmatic application of descriptive, explanatory and exploratory analyses models across institutional functions & structures with idea of aligning the structure-structure, structure-function, function-function relationships to the organisational goals as guided by creative prescriptions"
We all corporate managers have been asking ourselves this questions since decades. Still it is not clear. This is most poplar topic of highly charged executive programs and consultants .This is most vague management jargon of management high street. Ha Ha!
Any ways strategic management relates to board level decisions regarding future plan in line with vision mission long term growth objectives promoters ethics and policies and finding opportunities in jungle of business opportunities and leverage the resources skill fully keeping at least next 5 years goals. I don't think there are hardly any guys who can think beyond that since globalized business environment and technology is too dynamic and unpredictable . In short it is planned thinking on utilization of resources and adding more to stay float in race with competitors and possible substitute products. In strategic management you will find many fancy words like blue ocean thinking and so on not to forget good old Boston matrix
According to Prieto (2011), he defines organizational strategic management as the essential tool for the analysis and assessment of the current situation of the company, because it allows senior management to develop characterization activities, formulation and evaluation of satisfactory strategic alternatives, in the complex context of the company, generating As a result, the optimization of the resources available in your productive unit. Ultimately, the manager must be able to interpret the information and thus be able to make the most convenient decisions, to maintain and advance in a highly competitive and aggressive market. On the other hand, organizational strategic management has as objective to lead the firm on the road to success, always seeking to benefit stakeholders, especially your customers, partners and employees.
