I would like to understand what is the rock fabric, i.e are macromorphological features (beding, foliation, cracks) part of the rock fabric, or is rock fabric only the arrangement of particles (sand, clay) and/or minerals each other.
The term rock fabric refers to the arrangement of the elements (minerals, textures, fossils, layers) that make up that rock. So, it is basically the pattern of the rock. Bedding, foliation, schistosity, etc. are terms to describe specific rock fabrics.
do you have some documents on the different term to distinguished the arrangement of the elements (minerals, textures, fossils, layers) from the Bedding, foliation, schistosity, etc?
All (structural) geology textbooks will have a chapter on rock fabrics. Otherwise, just google for the notes of a basic structural geology course (e.g. https://courses.eas.ualberta.ca/eas233/0809winter/EAS233Lab06webversion.pdf)
From a geometrical point of view. fabric could be understood as the rock anisotropy (preferred orientations, planar or linear features, etc...). Fabric can also refer to specific physical properties; seismic fabric, magnetic fabric, etc… and has a similar meaning; anisotropy of that property.
Fabric is a term used for both structure and texture. The word structure is used in a sense to describe the mutual relationships between different parts of the same rock (eg. layering is described as layered structure, foliation – foliated structure) or relationship between different rocks in an outcrop or a quarry like large exposure, or a large area (eg. Folding and faulting among different rocks). However, it does not mean that structures cannot be observed in hand-specimens or in thin-sections. The word texture is used to describe the mutual relationship between different minerals in a hand-specimen or thin-section (like their grain-size, grain shapes, arrangements between the grains –like porphyritic texture, ophitic texture). Nowadays, instead of the term texture the term micro-structue is used. It is appropriate as it eliminates problems arising when structures are observed at thin-section scale. I would recommend the Books ‘Micro-tectonics’ by Cess Passchier and R.A.J. Trouw, 1996 (Springer-Verlag) and ‘An outline of Structural Geology’ by B.E. Hobbs, W.D. Means and P.F. Williams, 1976 (Wiley-International).
