I was searching for some hydrophilic coating and I came in to the phrase PEG 770. What kind of poly ethylene gycole it is? I only know that this number doesn't relate to the molecular weight.
The number which follows the abbreviation PEG is indicative of the average molecular mass of poly(ethylene glycol), for sure. Therefore, the polymer has a low average molecular mass of 770 daltons & this may lead some chemists to describe it as an oligomer with an average degree of polymerization of 17-18 .
That is avarage molecular weight of poly ethylene glycol. You can get the PEG between 10 to 10000 average molecular weight. Some times if the PEG is synthesized different molecular weight of the polymer we may get in that may be 770 average molecular weight of the polymer may be major.
It is the number of average molecular weight which is indexed by some digits (600, 770 , ...). All PEGs are designated by a number indicating the average molecular weight. PEG 200-400 are clear viscous liquids at room temperature but PEG 600-1000 require a temperature above 40°C. PEG 1500-8000 are white waxy solids that are supplied in flake form.
