Participation is most popular concept applied in political science in the context of democracy and governance. In anthropology and sociology the participation is popularly used as methodological approach to study livelihood and rural development issues. Lane (1995) suggested that 'participation is heavily influenced by theories of development and is therefore highly varied and complex'. There are many theories concerning participation by sociologists and social anthropologists. Social capital theory is a notable contribution.
