Most universities and higher education institutions ask doctoral students to publish quality paper(s) before they become eligible to submit a Ph.D. thesis. One wonders how useful is this approach. Does the concentration on paper not distract the student away from the thesis? Should S(he) not concentrate on producing a quality thesis rather than paper(s) before the submission of the thesis?

Then why are Universities worldwide after doctoral students to publish first to be eligible to submit their Ph.D. thesis?
Any time you can publish it will set you up for success in your dissertation or thesis as this is a scholarly discourse that has been vetted. The idea to keep in mind is that the articles should be research related to your dissertation/thesis. This process can move you closer to narrowing your topic or gaining more knowledge related to a problem. As others have shared, focusing on the dissertation is important. However, if you are heading into academia establishing a publishing record and routine is critical.
