I have been asked this question so many times. I give a general answer based on a metallurgy book which states that 'wrought iron can not be cast'. However, you can cast wrought aluminum alloy AA6061. So, what is the basic argument/characteristics that differentiates wrought and cast alloys whether it's wrought iron or wrought aluminum?

the fundamental difference between cast and wrought alloy is easy to understand: cast alloy is the alloy that was melted in a furnace and poured into a mold and allowed to cool. Wrought alloy is when the alloy is worked in the solid form (stamping, bending, rolling, extrusion, etc.) with the help of specific tools. These two manufacturing processes will yield two materials with very different properties.

The basic difference is:
Cast alloys are those that are directly obtained from casting (via melting, solidification,...).
Wrought alloys are those that are thermo-mechanically treated.

Compared to wrought iron or steel, cast iron is brittle, hard and brittle
While wrought iron is very flexible
Cast iron can not be bent or stretched
And it can not have good hammering as much as wrought iron
Its weak tensile strength means that it will break before bending or deforming. Unlike cast iron, wrought iron is completely malleable and works in various forms The more wrought iron works, the stronger it becomes, but cast iron does not have the added strength over time.
And as its fibrous appearance shows, wrought iron works better in finesse. Wrought iron contains less carbon than cast iron, making it softer and more flexible.
It is also very resistant to pressure and unlike cast iron, if a lot of pressure is applied, it will deform a lot before breaking.
Fabrication of both of cast and wrought alloys start with melting followed by solidification. By casting process, final product with net shape or near net shape can be achieved. For wrought alloy, Thick long plates cast structure( using continuous casting) are subjected to another processing like, rolling, forging, or extrusion) to fabricate bars, thin plates and blooms and discrete parts .
Cast structures are converted to wrought structures by plastic-deformation processes.
Some alloys are suitable to be fabricated with casting process and others are not. Fluidity and cast ability are very important property for fabrication of thin and complicated casting shape.
Wrought alloys structures are always finer grain with minimum internal defects compared with cast structure that usually contain coarse grains. So mechanical properties of wrought alloys are relatively higher.
Wrought alloys could be cast by some modifications in alloying composition and changing in process conditions for improving fluidity and cast ability.
Aluminum alloy can be divided into wrought aluminum alloy and cast aluminum alloy according to the processing methods.
Both they often have the same alloying elements but in different compositions and quantities especially the Si content.
Wrought aluminum alloy is a type of aluminum alloy that through stamping, bending, rolling, extrusion and other processes in the solid state, generally is easy to plastic forming.
Casting aluminum alloy is shaped as liquid to obtain parts, of which its flow performance, shrinkage performance, solidification mode are most concerned about by users, mostly for aluminum ingots;.In short, cast aluminum alloy has lower price per kilogram and wide range of shapes due to casting flexibility, cast aluminum alloys are widely used in the automotive industry, agriculture, and construction industries.
While wrought aluminum has better mechanical properties, processability, surface finishes and can be used for high-end applications like aviation and aerospace fields.
