Aspects of research (evidence) and practice knowledge are needed to achieve a high level of competence and it is not desirable to draw a strict line between the two types of knowledge.
Evidence based practice is the clinical practiced that emerged as a result of best rigor scientific research. However, practice based knowledge is one of the traditional source of knowledge that come from building experience, trial and error, authority...etc. We as nurses should always depend on evidence based practice to protect our patients and helping them to have the best outcomes without any risk.
Evidence-based Practice (EBP) is informed by relevant, high quality clinical research, patient’s preferences and the practioner's Practical Knowledge (i.e. Professional Knowledge). Practical Knowledge is the Knowledge that arising from professional practice and Experience. Moreover, this practice based knowledge is one of the most important component embedded in Evidence based Practice. EBP also suggesting that the clinicians should use critically appraised information in clinical practice for optimal care of their patients.
Evidenced based knowledge (EBK) is generated from scientific research while practice-based is knowledge (PBK) gained over time by means of practice (i.e. like apprenticeship).
If you notice, most apprentice know what they do but they do not understand the science or scientific rationale behind what they do. EBK makes a person to understand the science behind the practice. In this way (i.e. with EBK one is open to thinking outside the box, and can also apply the science to other situations.
Scientific reasoning affects practice. It makes practice flexible but PBK makes practice rigid as the technician cannot figure out another way of doing things other than what he has learnt through practice.
Evidence based method is the scientific way of proving a natural phenomenon whiles practice based Knowledge is gained through practicing in an area or field for a long time to acquire experience to work.
For instance many people in apprenticeship know how to make for instance bread or pastries knowing all items needed to make and bake this style is practice based.
with Evidence based practice, Scientific prove would be given as to the items to make up of the bread example why the yeast added behave in certain way to affect the baking process.
Evidence based practice is a practices that integrate the best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values while practice based knowledge is which the knowledge that has been obtained from building experience, trial and error.
