The secant modulus is one of the methods for evaluating the modulus of elasticity of a material by finding the slope of a line drawn from the origin of the stress-strain diagram and intersecting the curve at a "point of interest". It is basically a stress over strain ratio, Esec = σ /ε. Therefore, the secant modulus will equal the Young's modulus of elasticity of a material in the elastic region (at the yield point and below). However, in the plastic region the description of material properties requires more complex considerations, such as the changes in the poisson's ratio; therefore, the secant modulus is used to simplify the stress-strain relationship of a material in the plastic region.
