I have submitted a paper in a journal where a primary radiator is surrounded by 36 periodic symmetrical structures similar to what is shown in the attached picture.
I have named it a metsurface patch antenna. The reviewer thinks it is it is a "CP patch antenna coupled with parasitic elements" NOT a metsurface patch antenna.
I want to know how we can differentiate between parasitic elements and metsurface?
Metasurfaces are composed of periodic subwavelength metal/dielectric antennae that resonantly couple to the electric or magnetic or both components of the incident electromagnetic fields, exhibiting effective electric (represented by electric permittivity) and/or magnetic (represented by magnetic permeability µ) response not found in nature. Your surrounding structures are not small compared to a wavelength, so probably don't qualify as a metamaterial, where the elements should be small compared to a wavelength. In reality, the distinction is not huge. I think that your elements are about a quarter wavelength, and for a metamaterial I would think they would be smaller than 1/8 or 1/10 wavelength.
You can probably use two different kinds of maths to describe them (metamaterial band analysis, and parasitic patch analysis), and get similar answers.
Have you designed it as a metamaterial with a bandgap or other special property?
In addition, a metmaterial probably needs to be periodic, and you only have one ring of elements. It is usually the third element from the edge that starts behaving like it is in an infinite periodic metamaterial.

My structure is also periodic (36 elements) and the size of the unit cell is less than lamda/4. The real pic of the antenna is attached here. I would be glade to know the difference between parasitic elements and metasurface.
If that was an array of antennas, then the four in the middle (where your antenna is) would behave as if they were in an infinite array, the next ring of 12 would not see the same impedance and the 20 on the outside would have a significantly different impedance. What did you design your metamaterial to do? Did you give it an infinite phase velocity so the whole surface radiates in phase? (this is a bit like parasitic elements), or did you design it to stop the surface wave? (this is more like a metamaterial.
