A bioreactor is a laboratory device in which grow under controlled conditions, microorganisms (bacteria, phytoplankton) .
Three modes of operation:
- "batch " . Here, the input and output are zero. There is an exponential growth of microrganisms.
- "Fed batch”. Only the output is zero. This mode of operation is preferred when the objective is to control the population.
- “Continuous”. The flow rate of the output is equal to the rate of entry. The volume is constant in the biorector.
In the case of chemostat, the third type of operation (continuous) is preferred. Thus, microorganisms - nutrient mixture are expelled from the chemostat at the same rate as the input.
