The best pre-need advances are being made not so much in academic situations as in industry and university projects sponsored by industry. Compared to much of what one sees in this forum, even a new, competitive IC product design in 2016 will require far more "research" - or, more accurately, design advances and sheer invention - than can possibly be conducted in an academic vacuum.
