Organic matter is commonly and incorrectly used to describe the same soil fraction as total organic carbon. Organic matter is different to total organic carbon in that it includes all the elements (hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, etc.) that are components of organic compounds, not just carbon.

The determination of total organic carbon is an essential part of any site characterization or ecological assessment since its presence or absence can markedly influence how chemicals will react in the soil or sediment. INORGANIC CARBON FORMS, ORGANIC CARBON FORMS.

1. ANALYTICAL METHODS FOR TOC DETERMINATION.

Total Carbon = Inorganic Carbon + Organic Carbon…... (1)

TOC content can be measured directly or can be determined by difference if the total carbon content and inorganic carbon contents are measured. For soils and sediments where no inorganic carbon forms are present, Equation 1 becomes:

Total Carbon = Organic Carbon

The basic principle for the quantitation of total organic carbon relies on the destruction of organic matter present in the soil or sediment although there are a few non-destructive techniques identified in the literature that are currently under development

2. QUALITATIVE METHODS FOR THE DETERMINATION OF ORGANIC CARBON (Two method)

Both methods are certified in estimating organic carbon, but it is best to estimate it in dry ash

Perfect method to determinate organic matter is dry ash method

A rapid and precise method to determine organic carbon in soils is by digestion of soil samples with K2 Cr2 O7 and H2S04 for 30 minutes. Unreacted dichromate is titrated with ferrous iron and the difference in titration values between the blank and sample is proportional to the organic carbon content of sample. Sample size is not a critical factor so long as the total amount of organic carbon in the sample does not exceed 8 to 10 mg. Incomplete oxidation occurs if soil sample contains much in excess of 8 mg of organic carbon. one may get variable results.

there are vary methods to analysis total carbon in soil: Wet and dry methods. Tyurin is the best method as wet method for soils uncarbonated and Knop Sabinin is for carbonated soils. One of the best and modern method is ISO 10694 as dry method .

Best method of O C is Walkley Black Method but now some instruments are developed to determine TOC directly.

You can use combustion method or CHN analyser.

Dry ashing is more accurate than other methods.

The determination of soil organic carbon is based on the Walkley-Black chromic acid wet oxidation method. Oxidisable matter in the soil is oxidised by 1 N K2Cr2O7 solution. The reaction is assisted by the heat generated when two volumes of H2SO4 are mixed with one volume of the dichromate.
