In order to obtain balanced three-phase voltage, single reference signal is used for PWM. In multilevel inverter you need multiple carrier to trigger the power switches. So, you can not operate a multilevel inverter with single carrier PWM. So must need, multi-carrier PWM. I think you need to re-check your question! Is it correctly typed?

In the following article a single carrier is used to operate multilevel inverter.
In single carrier the switching rate is the same for all the devices while in multicarrier you can change the switching rates, shape and phase of the carriers.
main advantage is in hardware implementation. multicarriers need more space in a micro-controller
