What institution name should adjunct (part-time) professors use to publish their research? In the US, part time professors are not required to do research and publish, but this doesn’t mean they don’t aspire to continue their research interests. As an adjunct, how should I publish the results of my research? What institution name should I use? Any advice on how to align personal research interests with interested universities is greatly appreciated.
I think there is a matter that should concern part-timers even before deciding on the institutional affiliation they name. If the part-time professor conducted empirical research involving human subjects (or animals), the part-timer should have gotten the research plan approved by an institutional review board (IRB) to assure protection of the participants. It occurred to me that a natural transition would be to indicate an affiliation with the institution that is home to the IRB that approved the research unless the part-timer moved completely to another institution in the interim. I recognize that a part-time professor can be teaching at more than one institution. However, it is likely to be less confusing if the part-timer identifies himself or herself with the institution associated with the IRB that approved the research.

The IRB doesn't get involved with meta studies, or certain exploratory research such as literature reviews or position papers. What about these instances?
True. In my response, I addressed a concern for part-time professors who may want to collect data from samples. A full-time professor can conduct meta-analyses or conduct research on samples. I believe that part-time professors should be able to have the same choice as full-time faculty. My answer would apply to part-timers who conduct empirical research on human samples or in animal labs. They should submit their research plans to university IRBs. And when the part-timers identify their affiliation in a publication, they use the instituion that provided the IRB.

Il me semble que c'est d'abord une question de contrat de recherche, entre institutions (celle du chercheur, celle des enseignants), entre personnes (chercheur, enseignant). Tout doit être défini au départ de la recherche : conditions d'observations, de participations aux travaux pratiques (mises en œuvre), empiriques (observations simples), méthodologiques (entretiens, vidéo, etc.), et théoriques (qui analyse ?)… Puis de publications. Si la publication relève d'une revue professionnelle, l'enseignant doit être mentionné, au moins comme participant, sinon comme co-auteur. Pour une revue de recherche, tout est possible suivant le contenu de l'article…

Thank you for your follow up. Unfortunately, contracts for adjunct professors in the US do not address any research related activities (only teaching and only for a term). As a result, adjunct professors who would like to publish their research are left 'homeless' so to speak when it comes down to submitting work for publication. So, the question remains, what institution name should adjuncts append to their publications when they submit them to journals or conferences?
Il existe en France un statut particulier pour les enseignants qui sont investis, avec des chercheurs, dans des travaux de recherche. Ils peuvent être chercheurs associés, rattachés au laboratoire du chercheur. Il faut bien entendu qu'ils fassent la demande et que le laboratoire accepte…
Si ce statut n'est pas établi, il reste la possibilité d'être rattaché à l'institution professionnelle (collège, école).
Quite interesting indeed! In my inquiries with the chairs and deans of some of the universities I teach - the answer has always been - 'no such provision'.

I presume Claire is an adjunct at your university? If so, would she be able to list the institution under her name if she was to author a paper on her own and submit it to a journal or a conference?

I really appreciate this conversation. I, too, find myself as an adjunct with intentions of pursuing a PhD and career in research, somewhat "homeless." I have submitted abstracts listing the Organization as "Private Research" in some cases. If there is no IRB from a full institution and the community college that employs me does not encourage research, this is coming out of my personal work. I have seen research published with no institutional affiliations where IRB was not needed, so I should think adjuncts can do the same.
