Can anyone please suggest any literature that reports on H2 production efficiencies? For instance photosynthesis delivers H2 at very modest efficiencies of around 1.5% and conversion values of up to 75% are reported for SO Fuel Cells. I would love to hear thoughts on the processes that deliver the highest primary fuel to hydrogen conversion efficiency.
It depends on what you mean by efficiency. H2 is a byproduct of naphtha reforming and many petrochemical processes. So the H2 produced for essentially nothing is pretty efficient. Steam Methane reforming is the most common for on purpose H2 production technology - It is most efficient on the sense that it is usually the most economic choice. Auto Thermal Reforming and Fluid Bed processes (FBSG) are sometimes more economic (and efficient) for very large plants. Feed + fuel Heating value in the 1.2-1.25 product H2 heating value is about the best you can do. Most H2 plants require 1.5 times the HV of H2 or more.

Currently the Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) technique, also known as Steam Methane Reforming (SMR), is the most commonly used technique to produce hydrogen in large quantities. It involves reacting methane, the main constituent of natural gas, with steam to produce synthesis gas. However, in order not to poison the catalytic system, natural gas must generally be desulfurized before being sent to the reforming unit. Please check the following document.
