The impact on education is likely to be more devastating in countries with low learning outcomes, high dropout rates, and weak resilience to shocks. While school closures appear to be a logical solution to enforcing social distancing within local communities, prolonged school closures will have a disproportionately negative impact on the most affected students. These students have fewer opportunities to learn at home, and the time they spend outside of school may represent an economic burden for their parents, who may face challenges in finding care for their children for a long time, or even providing adequate food in the absence of school meals.
