Clean slate means to design from scratch. To rebuild Internet architecture without being limited by current protocols. I was thinking, which FIA proposal can be really classified as clean slate?
Clean Slate Design has been a hot topic some years ago in many countries, in particular the USA with the GENI Framework. It has been a way to get rid of current limitations of the Internet and a number of proposals have since flourished progressively. Though there are not specifically clear future internet architectures, some concepts and paradigms around virtualization and programmability have resulted in the current SDN (Software-Defined Networking) framework to be implemented in a number of network segments. Also Information-Centric Networking has appeared to be quite disruptive as, contrarily to usual models, information is not exchanged based on specific server/host addressing, but on object naming, providing the opportunity to retrieve information from any potential location this information is stored in. However those many solutions has not yet resulted in large deployment or wide adoption by the industry yet.
A full answer to the question cannot thus be summarized in few lines as many advances have been made on various aspects of Internet Design and Management.
There exist numerous papers about such new architecture and models and, as an example, there was in July 2011 a Special Issue of IEEE Communications Magazine that might be still worth consulting.
