I will forward you any other opinions that I receive on the subject.  It has come to light with us when we were assisting the University of Alberta Canada with some of their arctic research.  this type of variation in methodology makes it very difficult to compare results from one groups set of data to another.

We consistently use Whatman™ 934-AH™ Glass Microfiber filters which have a 1.5 micron particle retention size.

/The differences will not be of great imortance.   The weight of submicroparticles is very low to be significant in the final report.

The 20th edition of Standard Methods, the definitive book of water and wastewater test methods, lists ProWeighs from Environmental Express by name. Method 2540C, Total Dissolved Solids Dried at 180°C; Method 2540D, Total Suspended Solids Dried at 103-105°C; and Method 2540E, Fixed and Volatile Solids Ignited at 550°C all specifically list ProWeighs as an acceptable filter. ProWeighs were approved for use by the Standard Methods committee in 1997.

You are correct, different methodologies suggest different filter pore sizes.  Generally, the minuet difference between the various filter pore size will have little baring on the results however, when the water sample being analyzed contains alluvial material, fine silts and clay, as we tend to experience here in the far north, then there can be measurable variations in results when comparing the same fine sediment fractions filtered through different membranes. When results are published it is important to state what methodology is being followed and in the case of TSS analysis, what filter pore size is being used.    

The 0.7-micron filter (glass fiber type) is usually used when the water appears very clear or less turbid; in this case the use of 1.5-micron filter becomes frustrating and may not give accurate measurement of the Total Suspended Solids (TSS). Here, the 0.7-micron filter medium allows for high particle retention efficiency when filtering large volumes of less turbid water. Also when the turbidity is very high it is not advisable to use filter medium with small particle retention like 0.7-micron. Frequent clogging of the filter medium is usually encountered.

 Another new method for measuring TSS or Turbidity is the use of Acoustic backscatter. This procedure is very cost-effectively in estimating suspended-sediment concentrations and provides the opportunity for continuous suspended sediment measurements, just as turbidity sensors allow for continuous turbidity measurements. Although not as accurate as a weigh scale procedure mentioned earlier.

 It is therefore highly imperative for scientists and researchers to come up with conversion factor to enable standardization of the results for the various types of filter medium (from 0.7 to 2-micron) in use for TSS measurement.

For determining the total suspended solids, we commonly used 0.45 micron cellulose membrane for filtration purpose. Results were well published and recognised.

Whatman™ 934-AH™ Glass Microfiber which has 1.5 micrometer pore diameter is used for suspended solids analysis especially in wastewater analysis. As most described above, somebody has to report which pore size used in his research work to ensure reproducible results.

According to Suess M.J. (1992) examination of water for pollution control.+True color and apparent color  water are differentiated by passing through 0.45 micrometer pore diameter.

I use a 0.45 micron filter paper porosity to distinguish Dissolved Metal fractions from Total Metal fractions in a water sample. For TSS/TDS, I use either a 1.5 micron or a 2 micron porosity glass fibre filter membrane.
